The National Hockey League has been around for a long time, and franchises have come and gone. Some were successful in their day, while others faded into obscurity after just one season. Here are the three best franchises in NHL history when looking at success throughout all seasons that they have played.

1. Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadien franchise is the oldest team in NHL history. They have a long track record of success, and they are currently one of the best teams in their conference. The Habs have won 24 Stanley Cups over 110 years! That leads all franchises by almost 13 cups, which equates to about 11% of all cups given out. The Canadiens have a rich history, and they are always contending for the cup each year as well. The Habs have been around since 1909, which is even before the NHL was formed! They were one of two teams that started in the league’s first season back then. In all, this franchise has been around for 110 years, which is longer than any other team in the NHL.

2. Toronto Maple Leafs

The second-best franchise in NHL history is the Toronto Maple Leafs. This team has been around for a long time, and they have won 13 Stanley Cups over that span of time! That’s pretty impressive when you consider how many teams there were playing back then, but still only half as much as their conference rivals Montreal Canadiens, who have won 24. The Leafs have been around for almost 100 years, which again is longer than any other team in the NHL has even existed! They were one of four teams that started back when the league began, but they only played a few seasons and then folded before coming back to life as we know them today.

3. Detroit Red Wings

The last of the best franchises in NHL history is the Detroit Red Wings. The Winged Wheel has been a very successful team since they started playing back in 1926, and this current season is no exception. They have won 11 Stanley Cups over time which puts them at number three on our list here today! That’s more than half as many Cups as the Canadiens have won, but still far fewer than Toronto’s 13. This team has been around for almost 90 years now, which is quite a long time considering how competitive they are today! They were one of six teams that played in the NHL over 100 years ago when it was just getting started back then.
